The Dissatisfied Deer
One day, a deer was quenching his thirst in the river when he looked at his reflection in the water. He started admiring himself. “How wonderful my antlers are! They make me look so handsome!”
The deer turned around and found that his legs were too slim and long, and not attractive at all. “Oh,why couldn’t my legs be as beautiful as my antlers?” he thought sadly. “My legs are too weak and thin. I wish I could do something to make them look better.”
When the deer was busy with his thoughts, a lion came to drink at the river. When he saw the deer, he stopped and crept up slowly. Just as the lion was about to pounce on him, the deer saw the lion. He leapt to the side for safety, and then ran towards the forest as fast as he could.
For some distance there was open ground with hardly any trees. The deer’s legs carried him swiftly across the field. In a short while he was far ahead of the lion. He soon came to the edge of the forest and dashed in. He thought he would be safe among the trees, but he was wrong. As he ran through the forest, his beautiful and branched antlers became tangled in the branches of a tree. He was trapped.
The deer pulled and pushed as hard as he could but he could not free his antlers. He could not escape the lion now.
In a short while the lion reached the deer. He pounced on the deer and bit him.
“Oh,what a fool I was!,,the deer wept as he lay dying. “I hated my long and skinny legs but they were the ones that carried me to safety. Whereas, my beautiful antlers which I was proud of have caused me my death.”
Beautiful things are not necessarily valuable;valuable things are often neglected because they appear plain.
