The Peacock and the Crane
There was once a peacock who was very proud of his beautiful and colourful feathers. He loved boasting to everyone he met about how handsome he was. After heavy rain, he would spend hours admiring his reflection in the puddles of water.
“Oh,look how beautiful my tail is!” he would crow to anyone who passed by. “Just look at the colours of my feathers. None of you are as beautiful as I! I am the most beautiful bird in the world.”
He would then spread his tail feathers open like a large fan and sway from side to side. The other birds became rather irritated with his behaviour. They wished they could find a way to teach him a lesson. One day, the large crane came up with an idea.
“I know how to teach the proud peacock a lesson”he said.
A few days later, the crane strolled past the peacock. As soon as he saw the other bird, the peacock spread out his tail feathers and began strutting about proudly.
“Crane, look how beautiful I am!” he cried. “You are just a plain and dull bird. None of you can be as beautiful as I.”
“It’s true that your feathers are more beautiful than mine,” the crane replied. “But then I can do something that you can’t. I can fly. You may have beautiful feathers but your wings are not strong enough to lift you from the ground. I may be plain and dull, but my wings can carry me up into the sky!”
When the peacock heard this, he was embarrassed. He turned and walked away quickly without saying anything. From that day onwards, he never boasted again.
There are things more superior to external beauty.
