大约六七年前,我在美国威斯康星大学的麦迪逊分校学习,当时的一节哲学课上,助教正在向我们介绍笛卡尔。为了向我们说明事物并不是总按人类所想的那样发展,他给我们举了个例子:在地球上,从手中抛出的钢笔一定会落在地上,但在月球上,钢笔则会漂浮在空中。
我愣了一会儿,然后不假思索地脱口而出:“为什么?!”环顾四周,我才发现只有我的朋友马克和另一个同学对助教的解释感到迷惑不解,其余17名同学却都直直地盯着我,仿佛在问:“你有什么异议?”
“可即使是在月球上笔也是会落下的,只是速度慢了些而已。”我提出了异议。
“不,不会。”助教老师平静地说,“因为它远离地球引力。”
我想啊想!啊哈!有了! “您以前见过阿波罗号宇航员在月球上行走的情景,是不是?”我反驳道,“他们为什么没有飘起来呢?”
“因为他们的靴子太沉了。”老师以一种不容置疑的口气回答说。

About 6 — 7 years ago,I was in a philosophy class at the University of Wisconsin,Madison and the teaching assistant was explaining Descartes. He was trying to show how things don’t always happen the way we think they will and explained that,while a pen always fell when you dropped it on Earth, it would just float away if you let go of it on the Moon.
My jaw dropped a little. I blurt,“What?!” Looking around the room,I saw that only my friend Mark and one other student looked confused by the TA’ s statement. The other 17 people just looked at me like “What is your problem?”
“But a pen would fall if you dropped it on the Moon, just more slowly,” I protested.
“No it wouldn’t. ” the TA explained calmly, “Because it is too far away from the Earth’s gravity. ”
Think. Think. Aha! “You saw the APOLLO astronauts walking around on the Moon, didn’t you?” I countered, “Why didn’t they float away?”
“Because they were wearing heavy boots,” he responded, as if this made perfect sense.
