那么,为什么美国人想要更努力地工作呢?原因之一大概是在过去的20年里很多美国人的实际收入一直停滞不前甚至有所下降。人们长时间地工作仅仅是为了维持生活水平。 很多高级技术工人虽然实际收入有大幅提高,但同样也在更加卖力地工作。工资增长缓慢还有一个原因,那就是就业人数的迅速增加——对于这一点或多或少还有些争议。工人愿意延长工作时间可能和税收制度也有关系。在美国,人们额外工作一个小时,就会拿到更多的钱,在德国却不是这样。20世纪70年代以来美国边际税率的降低使得工人工作时间越长收入就越高。但是以上所有的答案都不足以解释这一现象,那就是工作时间在过去一个多世纪内一直呈下降趋势,现在却在美国出现逆转,为什么是在美国而不是在其他地方呢(尽管英国也表现出效仿美国的迹象)?

Then, why do Americans want to work harder? One reason may be that the real earnings of many Americans have been stagnant or falling during the past two decades. People work longer merely to maintain their living standards. Yet many higher skilled workers, who have enjoyed big increases in their real pay, have been working harder,
too. Also, one reason for the slow growth of wages has been the rapid growth in employment—which is more or less where the argument began. Taxes may have something to do with it. People who work an extra hour in America are allowed to keep more of their money than those who do the same in Germa¬ny. Falls in marginal tax rates in America since the 1970s have made it all the more profitable to work longer. None of these answers really explains why the century long decline in working hours has gone into reverse in America but not elsewhere (though Britain shows signs of following America’s lead)
