The Frogs That Wanted a King
There was a group of frogs who quarrelled endlessly. They finally sent a representative to heaven, requesting for a king to run their community.
The God of Heaven thought the frogs were simple- minded, so He just dropped a piece of wood into the marshland. At first, the frogs were frightened by the splashing water when the wood hit the ground, so they hid themselves under water. Later, they found that the wood stayed still on the surface, so they overcame their fear and showed up. Some even climbed up to sit on the wood with despising looks.
The frogs were so upset that the God of Heaven had sent such a dumb king. So once again they sent a representative to beg for a new king.
This time, the God of Heaven sent them an eel. The frogs found the eel too kind-hearted without the dignity and prestige of a king. So they requested for yet another king from the God of Heaven.
The God of Heaven asked, “What kind of king do you actually want?”
The frogs said, “Big-sized, matured, dignified, not too talkative, and a little bit good-looking. That will do”
The God of Heaven now gave them a high and mighty frog statue to be their king. The frogs seemed to be satisfied with their new king which was both re-spected and feared. They knelt down before the king, not daring to raise their heads for quite some time. Later, a few frogs daringly raised their heads, followed by the rest. Some even started to sit upright. So did the others. A naughty frog sat next to the king, while an-other hopped onto the king’s head. The frogs burst into laughter.
The frogs soon got bored with their king so they begged the God of Heaven for a more powerful king.
The God granted their request and sent a gray crane to take the post.
The new king was so merciless that he never for-gave any frog who offended him. The wrongdoers were eaten as penalty. What’s more, he had the right to find fault with any frog! Hence, the king enjoyed three sumptuous meals daily!
Soon, all the frogs in that place were eaten up by the gray crane.
Unwise choices may invite self-destruction.
