The Goatherd and the Wild Goats
Once upon a time, there was a goatherd who kept a large flock of goats. Every morning, he led his goats out to graze on the slope. In the evening, he shooed them back to the pen.
The greedy goatherd wanted to keep more and more goats. He felt that the she-goats gave birth too slowly.
One day, while in the pasture, the goatherd found a dozen wild goats mixing with his own herd. He hurried the goats back and locked them up all together in the pen.
The goatherd was overjoyed looking at those wild goats which came out of nowhere. He thought, “I,m so lucky today. If I can add an extra dozen goats every day, I’ll be making a fortune in months!”
The next day, the weather was stormy. “Looks like the goats can,t go to graze today,” he sighed as he made his rounds at the pen.
The hungry goats kept baaing at the goatherd as if they were asking for grass! Now that there were extra new goats waiting to be fed, the hay was running out of stock.
The goatherd thought, “The wild goats are the newcomers. They will run away if I do not feed them.” So he allocated a large quantity of grass to them, leaving only a small fraction for his own flock.
Fortunately, the storm subsided the following day. The goatherd turned all his goats out happily to the slope for grazing. Much to his astonishment, the wild goats climbed up the slope one after another and fled in no time.
The goatherd was so angry that he cursed, “You ungrateful wild goats, I provided you special care during the storm. Now that the storm is over, you just run off!”
A wild goat heard this. He turned around and said,
“We have to escape just because you gave us special care. Remember, yesterday you treated us much better than those goats you have been keeping for so long. Suppose you get a new batch of wild goats one day, they would become a privileged group and we the old ones would suffer.”
Some people forget to show appreciation of thinks taken for granted.
