The Crow and the Snake In a large tree near a river, a pair of crows built their nest. The mother crow laid her eggs in the nest and kept them warm until they hatched. In a hole at the lower part of the tree trunk lived a big snake. He was a greedy snake who loved eating young birds. Therefore, as soon as the little nestlings hatched out of their shells the snake quickly ate them up. The snake was a smart fellow. He would wait until the mother and father crows left the nest to look for food. Then he would glide up the tree and catch the nestlings. One by one the baby crows disappeared into the big snake’s mouth. Every time the mother crow laid a fresh batch of eggs, the snake would wait eagerly for them to hatch. Then he would eat them all up. The two crows decided they must put a stop to this. While they were both discussing this, a prince came by as usual to take his bath in the river. He took off his clothes and his beautiful jewellery and placed them carefully on the river bank. Then he dived into the river to bathe. When the mother crow saw the Prince bathing in the river, she hopped over to the place where the Prince had put his clothes and jewellery. She looked through the jewellery and found a sparkling gold bangle. She picked it up and flew away with it to the snake’s hole. It so happened that the snake was fast asleep after eating a huge meal. He did not see the crow putting the bangle into his hole and flying back to her nest. “My dear, why did you do that?” asked the father crow. “What will happen when the snake finds the bangle?” “Don’t worry,” answered the mother crow. “You’ll soon understand why I did it.” The Prince finished bathing and came out of the river. He dried himself and began to dress. Suddenly, the realised that his bangle was missing. He grew angry and told his guards to search for the bangle. The guards searched high and low but they did not find it anywhere on the river bank. Finally, one of the guards saw something glittering in the snake’s hole. He looked inside and saw that it was the bangle. Beside it was the snake, still fast asleep. The guard was afraid of the snake so he dared not take the bangle out of the hole. He quickly called the other guards. They killed the snake and took out the bangle. Then they returned the bangle to the Prince. “My dear, now I understand why you put the bangle in the snake’s hole,” said the father crow. “Now we need not worry about the snake eating any more of our children,” said the mother crow. “At last we can have peace.” Sacrificing or betraying others may get you into serious trouble in the end.
