Confessions
A wolf, a fox and a donkey talked about the shortness of life together. Then they decided to go to their ancestor’s grave to make their confessions and promise never to make the same mistakes again.
Three of them stopped in front of the grave and started to confess their sins one at a time.
The wolf said, “How can I be absolved from my guilt? I did a bad thing and I tremble all over with fear whenever I recall it. There was a mother goat who lived together with her four kids. The mother goat left the kids alone whenever she went to look for food. She only cared for herself and neglected the kids. I could not allow this to continue so I killed the mother goat. After that, I thought these children now without their mother might die of starvation sooner or later. I also didn’t want them to suffer as orphans so I ate them all.” When the wolf had finished his confession,he started to cry sadly.
The fox said, “Friend, don’t be sad. God will understand the reason you killed the mother goat and her children. The mother goat deserved to die because she was not willing to bring up her children. I think that you were not selfish at all when you ate the children. I understand your good intentions and God will also understand.,,
The fox faced the grave and said, “My sin is even worse than that. When the end of the world comes, how shall I repent? I saw a family rearing a lot of chickens. The chickens always fought and made a lot of noise. They disturbed the neighbours. They dirtied their cages and also the street nearby. There were chicken droppings everywhere. The neighbours kept complaining, and I couldn’t stand it when I saw the villagers so worried. So I went to the cage and ate up all the chickens.” The fox cried loudly after the confession.
The wolf said,“You did this with the best of intentions, you haven’t done anything wrong. God is fair. He will think that the chickens deserved it. You will definitely be rewarded for killing them.”
Then the fox and the wolf told the donkey that it was his turn to admit his faults.
The donkey said, “I never use horn, claw or teeth to hurt others. I have committed two misdeeds in my life. The first one was when I was too hungry one day and I ate the grass without the master’s permission. The second one was when a child tortured me for no reason and I kicked him. Although he was not injured,it was wrong of me to retaliate that way.”
After the wolf listened to the donkey’s confession, he said, “Bad fellow! You have committed two very serious misdeeds. You still hope to be pardoned? A lot of animals could have died of starvation because you took their share of the grass. You also kicked the child. If he had died, you would have been branded a killer. His death would have saddened his parents and relatives so much that they would die one after another.”
The fox added, “Frankly speaking, if these sins could be forgiven, there would be chaos in the world. People would laugh at statements about judgement and hell. This donkey is not only a criminal, but he also doesn’t respect God. He is guilty and unpardonable. He should be executed!”
The wolf and the fox then sprang on the donkey and feasted on him.
