中英文小故事:生命的奖牌

在一个中学演讲之后,我应邀去看望一名特殊的学生。疾病使他呆在家里,但他十分想见我,而这对他来说是件大事。
在去他家9公里的路上,我获知了一些关于马修的情况。他患有肌肉萎缩。他出生时,医生告诉他的父母他活不过5岁,然后又说 他活不过10岁。现在他13岁了,十分想见我,因为我是举重金牌获奖者,而且我知道怎样战胜困难实现梦想。
我与马修谈了一个小时。他从没有抱怨或 问:"为什么会是我!” 他一直在讲胜利、成功和怎样圆梦。很显然,他知道他在说什么。他没提到同学们因为他与众不同的嘲笑。他只谈论他对未来的希望以及有一天他想和我一起举重。
谈话结束后,我从公文包里拿出了我的第一块获奖金牌,挂在他的脖子上。我说,他比我更像一名金牌获得者,比我更懂得什么是成功,怎样战胜困难。他打量着金牌一会儿,把它摘下还给我,说:"你是胜利者, 你得这块金牌。有一天我也参加奥运会,也得金牌时,我会给你看的。”
我被他的话打动了。

The Medal of Life
After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him.
During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy. When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five,then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about over coming obstacles and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask. "Why me!" He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.
When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more a- bout successes and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a mo¬ment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, "You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.
