故事得从一个装着5只猴子的笼子讲起。在笼子里，有一根线绳子吊着一个香蕉，香蕉下方是一溜台阶。不一会儿，一只猴子向台阶走去，爬起了台阶，想去取香蕉。它一挨上台阶，所有其他的猴子都遭到冷水的浇淋。不多久，又有一只猴子去爬台阶,但结果相同，所有的猴子又都遭到冷水的浇淋。 冷水开关被关掉了。第3只猴子也想爬台阶。这次即使不会遭到冷水的浇淋，其他猴子也会上前制止猴子爬台阶的行为。 后来,人们从笼中撤出一只猴子,再放进去一只猴子。新来的猴子看见了香蕉，想去爬台阶。令其恐怖的是，所有其他的猴子群起而攻之。它又进行了一次尝试，但依旧厄运难逃。在此之后，它明白了一个道理：爬台阶就会挨揍。 接着，人们再次从最早的5只猴子中撤换出一只，并往笼子里放入另一只猴子。新来的猴子走向台阶，即刻遭到了攻击。比它早来一步的猴子加入了惩罚者之列，而且更加狠毒。 在第一批猴子中又有一只被撤换。新来的猴子爬上台阶，同样惨遭攻击。 前两个新来者参与攻击第3个进笼子的猴子，但却不知道为什么不能爬台阶，也不知道为什么要袭击那最后来的猴子。 在第4、第5只猴子相继被撒换了之后，所有挨冷水浇淋的猴子都被换掉了。尽管如此，没有猴子再去攀爬台阶了。它们为什么就不爬台阶了呢？“因为在这里，谁爬台阶谁就要挨揍。” Corporate Monkeys The story starts with a cage containing five 5 monkeys. Inside the cage, a banana hangs on a string and a set of stairs is placed under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as it touches the stairs, all of the other monkeys get sprayed with cold water. After a while, another ape makes an at¬tempt with the same result ：all the apes are sprayed with cold water. The cold water is turned off. When a third monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it even though no water sprays them. Then，one monkey is removed from the cage and replaced with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To its horror, all of the other mon¬keys attack him. After another attempt and attack, it knows that if it tries to climb the stairs, it will be assaulted. Next, another of the original five monkeys is removed and replaced with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm. A third original monkey is replaced with a new one. The new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well. Two of the four monkeys that beat the third newcomer have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are participating in the beating of the ne¬west monkey. After replacing the fourth and fifth original monkeys, all the monkeys which have been sprayed with cold water have been replaced. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs.
