理查德太太在丈夫上班后，把孩子送去了学校，然后回到了楼上的卧室。这天早上她太兴奋了，不想做任何家务，因为晚上她要和丈夫一起去参加一场化装舞会。她想打扮成一个幽灵的模样，并在前一天晚上给自己做了一套装束，她已经迫不及待地想试穿一下了。尽管这套装束只是用一条床单做成的，但效果却非常好。 穿上后，理查德太太就去了楼下。她想试试这件衣服是否舒适。就在理查德太太进入餐厅的时候，听见有人敲门。她想肯定是面包师，她告诉过他万一她不能开门的话就直接进来把面包放在厨房里的桌子上。理查德太太不想吓到那个可怜的人，就迅速地躲进了楼梯下面的储物室里。 她听见前门打开后客厅里响起了沉重的脚步声。突然，储物室的门开了，一个人走了进来。理查德太太意识到一定是电业局的人来看电表。她试图解释一下，说道：“是我。”但是太迟了。那个人惊叫了一声，向后跳了几步。理查德太太向他走去的时候，那人嘭地关上门逃跑了。 It’s Only Me After her husband had gone to work, Mrs Richards sent her children to school and went upstairs to her bedroom. She was too excited to do any housework that morning, for in the evening she would be going to a fancy dress party with her husband. She intended to dress up as a ghost and as she had made her costume the night before, she was impatient to try it on. Though the costume consisted only of a sheet, it was very effective. Richards went downstairs. She wanted to find out whether it would be comfortable to wear. Just as Mrs Richards was entering the dining-room, there was a knock on the front door. She knew that it must be the baker. She had told him to come straight in if ever she failed to open the door and to leave the bread on the kitchen table. Not wanting to frighten the poor man, Mrs Richards quickly hid in the small store-room under the stairs. She heard the front door open and heavy footsteps in the hall. Suddenly the door of the store-room was opened and a man entered. Mrs Richards realized that it must be the man from the Electricity Board who had come to read the meter. She tried to explain the situation, saying, “It’s only me. ’’ But it was too late. The man let out a cry and jumped back several paces. When Mrs Richards walked towards him, he fled, slamming the door behind him. |
