十月份的一天，生活在偏远保留地的印第安人问他们新来的首领,接下来的冬天是冷还是暖。新首领来自于现代社会,从来没人教过他那些古老的法术。他抬头看天，却怎么也搞不明白即将到来的冬天状况如何。然而，为了保险起见，他告诉自己的部落这个冬天将会很冷，并且召集部落成员收集柴火准备过冬。 然而这个首领比较务实，几天后他有了主意。他来到电话亭，拨通了国家气象服务中心的电话，问道：“这个冬天会很冷吗？”“看起来这个冬天会很冷的。”服务站的气象专家答道。于是,首领回到部落，吩咐部落成员们收集更多的柴火，以备过冬。 一周之后，首领再次打电话给气象服务中心。“照现在的情况来看，这个冬天还是会很冷吗？”“是啊，"气象专家再次回答，"这将是个寒冷的冬天啊。”于是，首领回到部落，命令部落成员们将他们所能找到的每一小片柴火都收集起来。 两周过后，首领又一次打电话给气象服务中心。“你确实肯定这个冬天会很冷吗？”“绝对肯定，"气象专家回答道，“现在的情况越来越证明这将是最冷的冬天之一了。” "你怎么如此确定?”首领问道。 专家回答：“印第安人正疯狂地收集柴火呢。” The Winter Is Going to Be Cold It was October and the Indians on a remote reservation asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a Chief in a modern society he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth，called the National Weather Service and asked, “Is the coming winter going to be cold?” “It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold,” the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again. “Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?” “Yes,” the man at National Weather Service again replied, “it’s going to be a very cold winter.，’ The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later the Chief called the National Weather Service again. “Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?” “Absolutely,” the man replied. “It’s looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever. “How can you be so sure?” the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, “The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy.” |
