The Best Gift One day two travelers met at the foot of the Golden Mountains. “Hello, young man. Where are you going?” asked the old one. “To the mountains,” replied the young traveler. “Be careful! There are dangerous men in those mountains. They don’t like strangers.” “Don’t worry,” said the young man. “I’ve got a gun. That's not necessary/' said the old man. “You don’t need any gun. I went there yesterday. Just take a present. If you take a present, everything will be all right. I went there yesterday. I just took a small bag of beans and gave them to the chief. He was very pleased with them. He had never seen beans before. He was so pleased that he gave me a small bag of gold.” The young traveler was very excited. “Oh, gold! Wonderful!” he said excitedly. The next morning he prepared his things and walked up the mountain. He took a present for the chief—a small bag of peas. Soon he met the dangerous men and their chief. The young traveler smiled nervously; and gave him the bag of peas. The chief was pleased with the peas. He laughed and showed them to his men. Then he invited the young man to eat with them. After the meal the chief smiled and gave the young traveler a small brown bag. The young man took the bag and went quickly down the road. After about a kilometer he stopped—he was impatient to count the gold. He looked all round. Now he was alone. He put the bag on the ground and opened it. How disappointing! There was no gold in the bag-only beans. |
