” My Father’s Maxim’ My father always teaches us to be frank and openhearted, not to gossip about others behind their backs. When I was in the middle school, I once competed with another classmate for the monitor. To draw my classmates over to my side, I invited some classmates of mine to my home and gossiped a lot about my rival. Having heard what I said, my father said, “When you point at others, back with your forefinger and speak ill of them, have you ever noticed that your other three fingers are pointing at yourself and fighting back at you with treble power?” My father has a habit of drinking tea. He always puts the tea in the sun first, letting the sunshine filtering it slowly. He doesn’t know much about the tea ceremony but always does in this way. Before going to work, my father always urges mother, “Put my tea in the sunshine and bask it.” In the evening, my father would drink the tea basked in the sun, reading or writing. As for this special habit, my father explains, “When drinking the tea basked in the sunshine, I can feel a taste of sunshine deep in my heart.” Once it snowed, I netted a bird. Grasping it in my hand, I felt as if I had found some treasure. My father saw it and bet that he could turn this black bird into a colorful one. I didn’t believe what he said and then let go my hands. I saw that the bird was gorgeously edged the color of the sunshine when it was flying in the sky freely. My father said that no matter how beautiful a bird was, it would turn black when it was held in our hands and lost freedom. In my childhood, when I was once asked to buy something for the family, the shopkeeper gave me ten cents more than he should give. At that time, ten cents was attractive enough for a child, with which I could buy a mountain of colorful candies. The ten cents given by the shopkeeper were five two-cent coins and I would rather keep “the unexpected fortune” than give it to my father. So I hid them under my shoe-pad. With such coins under the shoe-pad all of a sudden, I felt so uncomfortable. As time went by, my foot was worn and began to hobble. After having learnt the fact, my father just picked out the coins and returned them to the shopkeeper. Instead of scolding me, he said, “Don’t make your foot worn for a few coins and that will twist your path.” My father always goes out early in the morning and comes back late at night. At dusk every day, what I see is his limping, heavy and exhausted figure but he always wears a brilliant smile on his face when he sees me. No matter how hard the life is, my father can always find his logic for happiness: the bean curd eaten by the poor is just as delicious as the seafood eaten by the rich; the cotton- padded jacket worn by the poor is just as warm as the fur coat worn by the rich; and the rich spend much while the poor use a little money. All can live just as they are. My father wipes the sweat on his face and caresses our heads gently as he says, “Take it easy, my children. God won’t make us stay in winter all the time!”
