有一次，众多兔子聚集在一起，为自己的胆小无能而难过，互相悲叹他们的生活中充满着危险和恐惧，还常常被人、狗和鹰以及别的许多动物屠杀。他们都觉得，与其一生心惊胆战，还不如一死了之的好。于是就这样决定了，他们一齐奔向池塘，想要投水自尽。这时许多青蛙围着池塘边蹲着，听到了那急促的跑步声后，立刻纷纷跳下池塘。有一只较聪明的兔子，见到青蛙都跳到水中，似乎明白了什么。“朋友们，快停下，我们不必吓得去寻死了！你们看，这里还有些比我们更胆小的动物呢！”
 
这故事说明，那些不幸的人们往往会以他人的更大的不幸来聊以自慰。
